Collapsing Cube is brass kinetic sculpture inspired by the Platonic solids. In his dialogue Timaeus, Plato associates the cube with the Earth, and the dodecahedron with the shape of the universe. A chainmail mesh is suspended in the form of a cube inside of a dodecahedron. When the wires holding the corners of the cube are manipulated, it collapses and deforms, displaying the fluid range of movement of its tiny composite parts. The cube is handmade from a spool of brass wire which was wrapped, cut, and linked together. The vertexes of the dodecahedron were modeled in Rhino and 3D printed, then cast in brass and assembled.
